Turkish troops invaded the Republic of Cyprus 16 years ago using the pretense that they were protecting the rights of the Turkish Cypriots. This military action. which was condemned by the entire international community. left over 4.000 people dead and resulted in Turkey controlling 37 percent of the island. Some 200.000 Greek Cypriots remain refugees in the unoccupied part of Cyprus. unable to return to their homes in the north. which were seized during the invasion. The past year has seen changes of a magnitude that none of us in this body could possibly have imagined. The Berlin Wall. the symbol of the EastWest conflict. has crumbled and the Warsaw Pact has dissolved as a military alliance.
