Speech #1010165936

President. in the 200 years after the first Acadians arrived in my State. their descendents have greatly contributed to the culture. history. and economic growth of Maine. But. they are at a crossroad. Their enemy now is not deportation but the possible loss of customs. oral history. folksongsto a modern age that all too often sacrifices the tradition of the past to the immediate. I want to thank Senator BuMPERS for his thoughtful consideration of this legislation. in scheduling a hearing and in working with me on the series of amendments to S. 1756 that have improved and strengthened the legislation. I also wish to thank the chairman of the Energy Committee.
