Eventually. they moved up the river until they settled in the upper St. John River Valley in what is now Maine. Today that area. the St. John River Valley. is home to many whose ancestory is linked to the courageous men and women of the 1750s who refused to accept deportation as the loss of their identity as a people. Since the late 17th century. the Acadians of Maine have built prosperous communities and they have done their best to maintain their cultural heritage. It is terribly Important that the culture and history of this people be celebrated and preserved before it is lost to future generations.
