Among other things. the council maintains regular phone contact with many refusnik families as they try to persuade the Soviet Government to let these people go to the country of their choice. The councils work is vital to the cause of Soviet Jews and deserves continued recognition. I urge my colleagues to call on President Gorbachev as he visits our country shortly. to make the departure of Soviet Jews wishing to emigrate a truly free decision unrestrained by political or bureaucratic delays. Mr. Gorbachev should know that the treatment of the Jewish people in the Soviet Union is and will continue to be a deep concern to the American people and their Government.
