President Gorbachev has named two outspoken Soviet antiSemites to the 15 member Presidential Council. and the only form of denunciation came when Gorbachev was pressed by Western activists. He said: "I think we must do everything to prevent the spread of antiSemitism and all the other isms." I only wish he would be as effective in eradicating antiSemitism as he is at dismantling socialism. Summit after summit. we argued. negotiated. and conditioned our agreements with the Soviet Union on the basis of Soviet Jews and others right to emigrate. Now is not the time to give our vigilance. We must continue to stress the importance of free emigration and allowing direct flights to Israel. We should not have the United States Information Agency using our tax dollars to bring noted Soviet antiSemites to speak in the United States. But most importantly. we must clearly and forcefully indicate to the Soviet Union and to Gorbachev. that they better control and condemn this antiSemitic outbreak.
