Jewish Heritage Week also marks the 42d year of the independence of the State of Israel. As the sole. stable democracy in the Middle East. the United States has strongly continued to support Israel in her ongoing struggle for survival. This year. Mr. Speaker. Jewish Heritage Week takes on added significance. For the first time in recent memory. there are many thousands of Soviet Jews emigrating to Israel from the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. These men. women. and children have been denied the opportunity to explore and learn about their Jewish heritage. All that many of them know are a few words of Yiddish gleaned from a grandparent.
