No longer are libraries mErely passive repositories of books and related materials. todays library serves the expanding needs of every segment of society. Libraries provide access to information in a wide variety of mediabooks. periodicals. videotapes. sound recordings. even personal computer software. They are community information centers. providing information on all manner of public services offered by public and private organizationsemployment services. artistic exhibitions. aid to the elderly. or recent immigrants. et cetera. They provide space and support for voter registration. personal income tax preparation assistance. or meeting space for a range of community organizations. from Girl and Boy Scouts to great books discussion groups. Most recertly. many libraries have been addressing the enormous problem of adult illiteracy by providing basic literacy instruction in libraries. including the establishment of family learning centers serving adults and their schoolage children.
