Turkish forces invaded the island of Cyprus. occupying 37 percent of the country and killing and displacing thousands of Greek Cypriots. Today. some 30.000 Turkish troops still occupy the island despite condemnation of their continued presence by the United Nations. In addition. thousands of Greek Cypriots remain refugees in their own land. unable to return to their homes In the northern part of the island. Since the Invasion. the United Nations has undertaken to mediate the conflict between the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities and achieve a withdrawal of the Turkish troops. The negotiation process has focused on ways to reconcile the interests of the Greek Cypriots and the Turkish Cypriots. and to reestablish some form of central government on the island.
