Session #101 · 1989–91

Speech #1010115330

The same language was introduced last week by Congressman SoLAnZ and 20 cosponsors. This resolution will encourage the residents of Hong Kongwho are fearful. indeed terrified. of Chinese management of Hong Kong in 1997to obtain the right of abode in a second country while remaining in Hong Kong after 1997. The legislation is aimed at stabilizing the situation in Hong Kong by stemming the immediate flow of refugees. In addition. the proposed legislation calls on both the Government of the United Kingdom and the President to lead an international conference on Hong Kong which would encourage our allies to follow the same measures. This legislation is an important step in reassuring the residents of Hong Kong of our concern in the aftermath of the Tienanmen massacre.
