Session #101 · 1989–91

Speech #1010094083

I would like to make one point as to this July 1 date: It is very hard to determine how long a person has been in this country illegally because in many parts of the country they get jobs where the income is not reported by the employer. there is no social security tax or income tax withheld. and they live in coldwater flats. four. five. six. seven people to a room. They could say they have been here since before July 1 when. in fact. they just arrived in this country. There is no way to be accurate about the date that they arrived. I submit to you that you are opening the floodgates to a lot of people who come up here to find employment. knowing that they are going to get refugee status. There will be no way to determine when they got here. JSE 25843
