Following the shelling In and around Beirut this spring. the United States allocated $500.000 for relief efforts. including funding for private voluntary organizations. These include Save the Children. Catholic Relief Services. and others. The aid will be used primarily to provide medical supplies and other urgent relief needs. President Bush on July 20 approved an additional $2 million in emergency aid from the Emergency Refugee and Migration Assistance [ERMA] account in response to an emergency appeal by the International Committee of the Red Cross. We are a major supporter of the American University of Beirut. which includes the AUB Hospital. We will provide about $6 million in fiscal year 1989-$3.5 million in ASHA. $2.5 million in development assistance.
