Speech #1000093884

I am proud to support House Joint Resolution 180. designating October 6. 1987. as "GermanAmerican Day." There is a great friendship between West Germany and the United States which will be symbolized by the opening of the GermanAmerican friendship gardens in Washington. DC on October 6. There has been 300 years of immigration to this country from Germany. The first recorded organized immigration was on October 6. 1683. when 13 families33 peoplearrived in Philadelphia from Kraefeld. Germany. This was the beginning of the Pennsylvania Dutch. which is the mispronunciation of Deutsch. The 1980 census reported that there are over 52 million people in the United States who claim German ancestrythat is pure and multiple German ancestrywhich is 28.8 percent of the total population. In my own State of Maryland. the 1980 census recorded that 1.017.481 personsor 24 percentclaimed multiple German ancestry. and 366.844or 8.7 percentclaimed single German ancestry. Of these. 16.465 were actually foreign born. The history of German settlement in Maryland goes back to the 1680s in Pennsylvania. German farmers traveled to the Monacacy Valley through Delaware to the fertile farming valleys in Maryland.
