Session #100 · 1987–89

Speech #1000080229

So we will temporarily stay their departure. They gain no vested rights from this. This time does not count toward their citizenship. They are excluded from virtually all welfare benefits by the terms of the bill. That is what it says. They can stay here pending the deportation. That is all the bill says. It seems to me very much within the humanitarian tradition of the country to have them here. We have given extended voluntary departure to other countries. Arguments raised before will be raised again that if we give to one country we have to give to every country.
