Session #100 · 1987–89

Speech #1000080229

Why are they together in the bill? I will tell my colleagues why. The bill originally responded to the fact that there were large numbers of Salvadorans here facing potential deportation. Last year. some of us felt that the situation in Nicaragua had become similar. not in any political sense. but in the fact that there were violent revolutions in both cases. and we therefore felt that in both cases we had a large number of refugees already here. and this was an appropriate response. Think for a minute what the alternative is. The alternative to this bill is massive deportation. which no one. I believe. has been advocating. or it is allowing people here in an illegal status. We are saying we do not want to deport large numbers of these people. and everyone agrees that they have been constructive citizens on the whole. nor do we want them to stay here in an illegal status.
