After 13 years. whatever architectural "secrets" Mark had knowledge of are surely no longer crucial for state security. if they ever were. Prime Minister Gorbachev has repeatedly reiterated his intended policy of glasnost in the Soviet Union. of a loosening of state control in the economy and in society. Allowing Mark. Svetlana. and their family to emigrate would be a concrete step toward demonstrating that these encouraging Soviet pronouncements are more than mere words. In addition. it would be an affirmation of simple humanity and justice. the thirst for which Mark and Svetlana bear elequent witness.
