Radical political movements will spring up calling for the repudiation of debts to the Western banks. whether or not they succeed. they could bring on rightwing military dictatorships that may follow similar debtrelated policies. The problems that would be created for the US by a radicalized Mexico are obvious. Whether the radicalization is leftwing or rightwing. the result may be the same: virulent antiAmericanism and an increasingly unstable southern border. The problem of illegal immigration. already extremely serious. will become even greater. The racial and political tensions in the US. especially if we are in the throes of a recession. will heighten considerably. And no one has made any kind of estimate of the additional military cost of having to maintain tighter security on the USMexican border.
