Session #100 · 1987–89

Speech #1000040398

Safdeye has had a distinguished career as a businessman and a philanthropist and his accomplishments in commerce extend from my district in Brooklyn to all corners of the world. He is also one of the most committed and respected leaders of the Syrian Jewish community in the United States. And Ellis is a close personal friend. whose wisdom and judgment have guided me throughout my career in Congress. Mr. Speaker. there is perhaps no more imperiled community in the world than the Jews of Syria. The handful of Jews still living under that hostile regime are burdened with intolerable oppression in their daily lives and face seemingly insurmountable barriers which prevent them from emigrating. Ellis Safdeye has led the fight for his brethren in Syria. Ten years ago.
