Session #100 · 1987–89

Speech #1000025575

In the past. in periods of major economic distress. some farmers left the land to migrate to urban areas to find jobs. According to a recent study done by the National Coalition for the Homeless. Des Moines City officials are illequipped to meet the needs of the homeless. and would be unable to respond to the resounding needs of an immigrating population of displaced farmers. Certainly. the economic health of Iowa has already been affected by the burgeoning farm crisis. and more recently. by plant closings. The numbers of people struggling to survive below the poverty level has increased. both in the State and throughout the region.
