I am delighted to join with Senator LUGAR in introducing this joint resolution to commemorate October 6. 1987 as "GermanAmerican Day". Four years ago. on October 6. 1983. Americans marked the 300th anniversary of the arrival of the first German immigrants to the United States. In celebration of that anniversary. the President proclaimed it a day to honor the contributions made by German immigrants to the life and culture of the United States. The joint resolution we are introducing today carries on that tradition. and provides us the opportunity to again acknowledge those special contributions which GermanAmericans have made to the United States. According to the 1980 census.
