While I realize that this body has authorized the Park Service to charge entrance fees to national parks.. this is not an appropriate place for that authority to be exercised. Clearly the public hasvoluntarilypaid more than its share. As far as I am concerned. the people have already paid their way. Mr. President. like so many Americans. I am the grandson of immigrants. My family first came to this country under that "lamp lifted beside the golden door." the sight of which never fails to fill me with emotion. We should not be so petty and penurious as to charge a fee to feel that pride and gratitude.
