The country of Lebanon has been mired for years in civil strife. civil war. overrun by the country of Syria. overrun by fundamentalists from other countries: civil war between its own people. brother against brother. family against family. It has become a playground for terrorists. it has become a safe haven for people who kill. maim. hijack. threaten Americans and nationals of other countries. We are almost helpless to do anything about it. and this is a tragedy which we should be doing something about with every effort that we can make. But while we are witnessing this. we are also witnessing a tragedy for the United States. Right now. nine Americans are being held. eight Americans and one naturalized American. Mr. Singh. are hostages.
