Mr. President. today I am reintroducing legislation to suspend the deportations of Salvadorans from the United States. I have introduced this legislation in the previous two Congresses but have been unsuccessful in having it passed. principally because of opposition by the administration and their allies in the Senate. This year. with the changeover in control of the Senate. I have high hopes we will finally be able to enact this important and badly needed legislation. I have been involved in trying to help displaced Salvadorans who have been in the United States since 1981. At that time. the plight of several of these unfortunate people who had found their way to my home town of Tucson was brought to my attention by the Reverend John Fife and by his associate Jim Corbett.
