Session #99 · 1985–87

Speech #990274932

Last. but I think the most important reason why we should not have legalization. why my amendment to strike it should be voted for. is that by passing a legalization provision. a date like January 1. 1982. where you grant the equivalent of blanket amnestywe can fudge about the term. but that is basically what it isto everybody who has been here for any time since that date. by doing that. we are in effect sending a signal to those across the border to come over here and try to get the fraudulent documents necessary to get to stay here. And to others who might not be willing to try the fraudulent route. we are saying we have done it once now. we will probably do it again. I think that is a horrible magnet message to be sending out. We have in this country todaywhat?-20 million illegal immigrants? I do not know the number. A lot of people say it is less.
