Session #99 · 1985–87

Speech #990270767

That is the difference between appeasement and peace. Mr. President. that. it seems to me. is the choice we are confronted with today: appeasement of the Turks or principle. If we lift the embargo. we have decided that it is best to appease. the Turkish Government. at the expense of the rule of law. at the expense of 200.000 GreekCypriot refugees. and at the expense. perhaps of our relationship wtih Greece. I hope my colleagues will give careful consideration to the points I have raised. And I hope the choice we make today will favor the principle of law. rather than the expedient of appeasement.
