Session #99 · 1985–87

Speech #990264856

Mr. President. last week. the House of Representatives rejected out of hand the opportunity to debate and vote on a muchneeded overhaul of the Nations immigration laws. This unfortunate decision on the part of the House makes it the third time that the Senate has approved immigration reform only to see it die in the House. That the Senate was able to successfully deal with this very complex and controversial bill is largely due to the leadership and perseverance of the assistant majority leader. Senator ALAN SIMPSON. As chairman of the Immigration and Refugee Policy Subcommittee. Senator SIMPSON has guided this bill through the rough waters of subcommittee. committee. floor. and into conference action. His dedication to seeing to it that Congress grapples with this issuean issue that affects the lives of literally millions of peopleis well known.
