Since the early 1970s. when Angola began her struggle for independence. there has been a constant and overt mission by neighboring South Africans to undermine this country and keep her people economically dependent on others. Mr. Chairman. undermine is a rather light word to describe the economic sabotage and severe military attacks by UNITA and South African forces of which Angola has been subjected to for the last decade. There have been full scale invasions. raids on refugee camps that were thought to be SWAPO bases. and an occupation of southern Angola since 1975. The South African Government has given UNITA aid to the tune of $1 billion over the past 5 years. This has enabled the two forces to attack not only Angola but neighboring countries as well with increasing regularity.
