Session #99 · 1985–87

Speech #990251370

I might say parenthetically there is a little arrogance about that. as though Castro. as though the Sandinistas. and as though the MPLA are not capable of knowing where they want to go. are not capable of understanding and determining the direction in which they want to take their followers without us forcing them to go in our direction. But you know what is strange about that argument? We have never heard that by cutting off aid to Savimbi. we drove him into the arms of South Africa. You never hear that side of the argument. I wonder why? Now. we are helping the mujaheddin in Afghanistan. So is the Ayatollah Khomeini. There are 1 million refugees in Iran fleeing from Afghanistan. Imagine how great things must be in Afghanistan if you have to go to Iran for safety. Does that ally us with Iran and the Ayatollah?
