This February my daughterinlaw gave birth to a baby. Now the fight is to get all five of us out. The Visa Office demands that my daughterinlaw produce a written renunciation of financial claims from her mother. The mother had submitted such a waiver of financial claims. but it was not notarized. so the Visa Office demands a new one. which the mother refuses to give since she has maintained no relations with her daughter for many years. The command to let my family go must come from someone higher up in authority. like you. We appeal to you. a man who has been in the closest contact with the American way of life for many years. and who can appreciate more than regular Soviet leaders the damage being done to the Soviet image by our prolonged detention here without rights and in unnatural circumstances.
