Session #99 · 1985–87

Speech #990217717

This week we are fortunate to have on display in the Rotunda of the Russell Building an excellent exhibit of work by a few Western photographers. This display. entitled "Afghanistan Today." poignantly illustrates the brave struggle of the Afghans. The statistics of the suffering in Afghanistan are well known: Over 1 million casualties. the largest refugee population In the world. widespread violations of human rights. rampant disease and famine. This exhibit. however. reinforces the fact that behind these cold statistics are human beings whose lives have been shattered by over 6 years of continued bloodshed. The exhibit introduces us to the side of the war that we do not see every day on the nightly news.
