The Contras have proven adept at escalating violence but totally incapable of winning either the hearts and minds of the people or the civil war itself. Our intervention has proven counterproductive. helping solidify an irrationally leftist government. We have chosen to aid groups whose leaders are themselves corrupt. who have squandered taxpayers dollars. who have caused thousands of their original followers to become so disdainful of the counterrevolutionary model set by their own leadership that they have broken out of their barbedwire camps and emigrated to the United States. The time has come to reconsider an illchosen path. Liberals may have erred by believing the Sandinistas wouldnt opt in the direction of police state controls.
