Last Friday was Shcharansky Day in my hometown of Springfield. MA. The Springfield Jewish Federation organized a very meaningful ceremony of tribute and thanksgiving for the triumph of the Shcharanskys. and I am sure that similar events have taken place in many other American cities and towns. However. at this time of celebration. we must not lose sight of the fact that thousands of Jews continue to be denied the right to emigrate from a country which punishes them for their religious beliefs and belittles their values.
