Mr. Shcharansky has become an international symbol for the struggle for religious freedoms and basic human rights. Today we recognize Mr. Shcharanskys dedication to justice. and we honor his contributions and personal sacrifices toward the betterment of mankind. Speaking on behalf of Soviet Jews. Mr. Shcharansky related firsthand knowledge to the outside world concerning the imprisonment. persecution. and emigration denials experienced by Jews currently living in the Soviet Union.
