Session #99 · 1985–87

Speech #990186229

By enduring 8 long years of being harassed. interrogated. threatened. and separated. they have demonstrated the kind of strength and spirit of which heroes are born. Each day they were tested. each day they fought to be free. and they have prevailed. It is a blessing that Mr. Shcharansky was released from the Soviet prison. and that he is here in the United States. However. we must not forget those Soviet refuseniks that are still being denied their right to emigrate. By awarding the congressional gold medal. we honor the Shcharanskys and their cause. We also affirm our commitment to those thousands of Jews in the Soviet Union for whom the promise of the Helsinki final act remains to be fulfilled.
