Session #99 · 1985–87

Speech #990184082

On October 21. 1984. of course. there was a Presidential debate. Vice President Mondale indicated that he opposed the sanction provisions of SimpsonMazzoli while President Reagan expressed his support for SimpsonMazzoli "strongly"-those are his words during the debatebut with reservations relating to some provisions in the House of Representatives bill and not contained in the original legislation. So again he said he strongly supported immigration reform. he strongly supported perhaps the most essential aspect of it. and maybe the most controversial aspect of it. that is. the question of employer sanctions. but indicated that he had some reservations about parts of the House bill and hoped that it would be worked out in conference. Now in October the bill died in conference. Primarily. at that time because of the issue of employment. discrimination language. and the amount of Federal reimbursement funds to be made available to the States.
