I wish to take a few moments to mark this anniversary commemoration and to praise the St. Stanislaus Society for its dedication and contribution to the Polish community of western Massachusetts for the past 75 years. The Polish immigrants who came to western Massachusetts during the late 19th and early 20th centuries at first met hardship and adversity in their adopted homeland. They encountered a language and a culture alien to their own. These barriers hindered their efforts to find employment in the mills and factories of the region and many immigrants who settled as farmers subjected themselves to great strain and toil to provide for their families. Through the efforts of such ethnic organizations as the St. Stanislaus Society. the Polish community in my district has preserved its vibrant and unique culture and heritage and contributed to the cultural flavor of the region as a whole.
