Session #99 · 1985–87

Speech #990175894

Commissioner William von Raab. of the Customs Service. believes that Miles was a victim of a new wave of drug trafficking along the border of the southwestern United States. The surge in trafficking there has occurred as cocaine and marijuana smugglers try new routes to bypass increased law enforcement in Florida and the Gulf Coast. Officials say Colombians have moved into the southwest on both sides of the border and are involved in drug trafficking and smuggling illegal aliens into the U.S. Miles was gunned down about a mile from the San Miguel Gate on a Friday night in February and officials speculate that his slayers could easily have melted into the crowd at the "flea market" without attracting any attention. The Customs Service has offered a $100.000 reward for information on the killers. and Commissioner von Raab says he is determined to find out who committed the dastardly act and bring them to justice.
