Session #99 · 1985–87

Speech #990175894

Mr. President. every weekend there is a strange ritual that takes place at the San Miguel Gate on the U.S.-Mexican border. The San Miguel Gate is a border crossing from Mexico into the Papago Indian Reservation in southern Arizona. From Friday afternoon to Sunday afternoon. the gate turns into a commercial "nomans land" as Mexicans and Papago Indians gather for the "flea market." where food and clothing are sold. and jewelry. trinkets. and household items are traded in a fiesta atmosphere with music. singing. and dancing. There is strict obedience to the law of supply and demand and the principle of free enterprise is in full evidence.
