Session #99 · 1985–87

Speech #990175249

Fortunately. Sen. ALAN SIMPsON. RWyo.. this year introduced reform legislation with less burdensomeand optionalrecordkeeping requirements and no criminal sanctions. Limited criminal sanctions were added in committee but Simpsons bill remains a tough and fair attempt to regain control of our bordersone business can live with. But the House of Representatives seems determined to hang the immigration control millstone around business neck. Legislation introduced by Rep. PETER RODINO. DN.J.. takes those onerous recordkeeping requirements off the trash heap and puts them back on the tableand imposes criminal penalties for mere paperwork violations. Congress would do well to enact legislation closer to the Simpson version.
