Mr. President. I rise today to introduce legislation for the relief of JensPeter Berndt. The bill would grant permanent residence to Mr. Berndt and expedite his naturalization as a citizen of the United States. Mr. Berndt. or Peter. is 22 years old and a native of the German Democratic Republic. better known as East Germany. a Communistbloc state. On January 7. 1985. while in Oklahoma City as a member of the East German swim team. Peter requested and was granted political asylum in the United States. He made that courageous decision. at great personal risk. because he wanted to become an American and live in freedom.
