Today I wanted to make reference to one of those that I think will be more and more prominently taking a place in this rich tapestry of black history. That has to do with the Spanishspeaking blacks. Today in the United States. with the Incursion of immigrants from Puerto Rico. from some of the Caribbean islands. from other places where the Spanish language has been the official or traditional tongue. as here in the Nations capital. there is a substantial presence of such citizens of black descent. Now they face tremendous problems. They perhaps are the ones that are the greatest victims of antipathy or prejudice in our society today because even with their fellow citizens. equally of black descent. the fact that they speak what. to tile dominant group. is a foreign language offers some opportunity for discrimination that they face here daily not only In the District but in the Northeast predominantly. perhaps with the exception of Miami and the State of Florida.
