For Mr. Shcharansky. his release is the culmination of an 8year struggle for freedom. for those Soviet Jews who remain in the Soviet Union. the targets of intimidation. harassment. and imprisonment as they attempt to emigrate. it represents a glimmer of hope. Mr. Shcharansky. a mathematician and leading spokesman for the Soviet human rights movement. was arrested in March 1977 on charges that he was a spy working for the United States.
