This resolution not only condemns the Soviet Union for its invasion and occupation of Afghanistan. but it also pays tribute to the heroism of the Afghan people in their Just struggle against the occupation of their country by the Red army. The resolution also takes note of the fact that the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan has repeatedly been condemned by the United Nations. the Nonaligned Movement. the European Parliament. the Islamic Conference. and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. It expresses ihe sense of the Congress that the United States should in addition to condemning the invasion of Afghanistan express its support for a negotiated political settlement of that conflict which would be based on the complete and total withdrawal of Soviet forces from that country and the restoration of the independence and nonaligned status of Afghanistan. the selfdetermination of the Afghan people and the return with honor of the Afghan refugees to their own nation.
