This Congress he introduced the Fair Employment in Congress Act. designed to bring the legislative branch under the scope of the pivotal civil rights and antidiscrimination legislation of the 1960s and 1970s. all of which was passed during his tenure. lie has cosponsored and come out strongly in support of such bills as the Hate Crimes Statistics Act. requiring the Justice Department to keep statistics on crimes motivated by racial. ethnic. and religious hatred. and H.R. 3008. aimed at eliminating sexbased and minoritybased wage discrimination. lie has also kept true to his convictions in supporting the rights of farm workers. refugees. senior citizens. and underprivileged youth. and has shown his solidarity with the Hispanic population by adamantly opposing the administrations policies in Central America. l)ONs rocksolid beliefs. untarnished and undaunted after 20 turbulent years. can be summed up in a question he posed to his colleagues on the House floor 3 months ago: "Should we fear finding out the truthnothing more. nothing less?"
