I recognize the need to raise revenues to offset the deficit and I support the use of user fees. however I do not believe that we should place this burden on a business community fighting daily to regain its economic balance. During the Finance Committee markup of these customs user fees I successfully fought to remove a proposed $1 head tax for persons crossing the land border. The initial revenues estimated from this one sole fee was $152.88 million or almost half of the revenue package requested. Fair is fair. but where is the safety net for families hard hit by trade and commercial business failures?
