Session #99 · 1985–87

Speech #990117844

Our Arizona border communities have suffered serious economic setbacks in recent years due to a number of conditions outside of their control. The peso devaluation has hurt merchants on the Arizona side of the border. Likewise. the closure of some border crossing stations. and shortened hours of others. inhibited the flow of traffic across the board. resulting in severe economic damage to Arizona. Additionally. the Federal Government acted capriciously earlier this year when they insisted on indepth. meticulous searches of all vehicles crossing from Mexico into the United States following the murder of Agent Camarena. While this action was aimed at penalizing the Mexican Government. it resulted in an additional economic burden on Arizona towns and cities and was not effective retribution for the death of our agent.
