One young family made a particularly lasting impression on me. Sadly. though. their story is all too common among Soviet Jews. Boris and Irene Ohinis live in Moscow with their children and have been trying to emigrate since 1978. They have been denied permission seven times and have endured great personal and financial hardship because of their desire to leave Russia. Boris was fired from his job immediately after applying for a visa in 1978 and. since that time. has been forced to support his family through a number of odd jobs. Irene. attempting to give Jewish children a sense of the heritage that they have been denied. taught Hebrew in a kindergarten that the Government has shut down. The entire family has been subjected to threats and harassment for more than 7 years now.
