I am pleased to join our colleagues today in deploring the continuing repression of Soviet Jews. I commend Representatives BILIRAKIS and STOKES for organizing this special order. Soviet human rights abuses show no sign of abating and represent clear violations of the Helsinki Final Act. Jewish emigration has slowed to a trickleslightly over 1.000 are projected to be released in 1985from a level of 51.000 in 1979. No longterm refuseniks and dissidents have received permission to emigrate and longterm family reunification cases remain unresolved. Moreover. cultural repression and discrimination have intensified. Arrests of Hebrew teachers are continu.rg and more Jew. are becoming prisoners as well as refuseniks.
