When you apply for that exit visa. you know that your life as a member of Soviet society is over. because you are fired that day. We talked with many refuseniks who. rather than put their boss with whom they may have a good relationship. through the exercise of having to fire them. they just simply go in and say. "Today I am applying for my exit visa. and knowing that you will have to fire me. would it be easier on you If I simply resigned?" They are willing to give up everything to be free. I think it is helpful to talk about specific people and case histories. One of the first families I met was the Pelsin family In Leningrad. 10 members of this family. 3 different generations.
