Speech #990019340

For the Jewish people. the Passover holiday is a festival of freedom. commemorating the liberation of the Jewish people from slavery under the Pharaohs of Egypt. The Passover season is a time to celebrate freedom. Therefore. it is particularly appropriate for us to call attention today to the plight of the Jews in the Soviet Union who are denied their freedom of religion and who are denied the right to emigrate to Israel. The 2V million Jews in the Soviet Union are unable to hold a Seder in their homes. the traditional observance of Passover. without risking harassment and possibly arrest. In all reality. it is illegal for the Jewish people of the Soviet Union to practice their religion or study their heritage.
