I must add as an aside that I find it rather ironic that in the very week that we are discussing the nomination of Edwin Meese to be Attorney General they have resurrected former Attorney General John Mitchell. who served time in prison as a criminal. and have hung his portrait in the halls of the Department of Justice. That has to say something to our society. Well. I talked about the Attorney General as the chief lawyer. the chief law enforcement officer. heading up the FBI. the Federal Bureau of Prisons. the U.S. Parole Commission. the U.S. Marshal Service. the Immigration and Naturalization Service. directing the actions of hundreds of lawyers throughout our Government and representing all people generally in matters and giving advice to other Federal departments.
